Sea Freight: How are Products Shipped

This is a standard and excellent method to transport commodities.

In commodities, transport is a fundamental business pillar. By transactions nature (products bulks, most of them measured in tonnes) the most common transportation method is sea freight. It ensures products delivery promptly, it can handle big amounts movement and allows commercial entities to control their products transportation. It’s an essential transportation method of commodity businesses. Today you’ll learn why and how are products shipped by this method!

What’s sea Freight?

This is a transportation method that focuses on material transportation (raw and manufactured, organic and inorganic) in containers transported by cargo vessels. These are specially designed to hold and transport these goods and are used mostly by international entities.

Sea freight is limited only by the cargo size and embarkation characteristics. Most international ships are designed to fit through transportation areas (one of those being the Panama Channel) and to allow easy load and unload of materials in custom ports. These are often long ships, which have internal and external spaces where products are stored in their containers. These containers are owned by one company and can be used by the same or rented to third parties.

In commodities, products are shipped by producers or commodity contract holders. Providers are always in charge of transportation, and there are few instances in which a buyer is responsible for delivery. Sea freight is an effective and timely method to ensure speedy delivery, by its speed on transportation as on inspections in customs areas, as these are often quicker than other methods, namely land and air freight.

How are products shipped?

The first thing before a product is sold is packing. For commodity transport, products need to be shipped in a way that ensures they will arrive intact. This makes sea freight a perfect choice for several reasons. But to understand them, you need to know how these products are shipped. So here’s the process, broken down.

Buying intent: when a company thinks of buying your products, there’s a good chance they contact you to state their intent and check availability.
Product selection: buyer's commercial representatives select products after a first inspection.
Product packing: products are then packed accordingly. Each industry will have independent and specific requirements but packing it's a general rule in sea freight.
Product labeling: packages are labeled. Number, characteristics, destination and so on are reflected in the documentation that accompanies packages.
Container loading: products are carefully stored in containers. They need to be organized to make later inspections easier.
Shipping: once all information is verified, the products in containers are shipped to their destinations. This process is done with careful consideration of transportation routes and other aspects that will ensure delivery.
Delivery and final inspection: this is the last step in sea freight. Inspection is done once again. Legal representatives of the buyer check everything is right, and further transportation is undertaken to deliver products to their final destination.
